Powder Flights

Today was just a casual flight day with no planned experiments. We still had about a kilo left of the holi powder we flew on previous launch days, and because it was blue skies we decided to launch a couple of the rockets.

To supplement the holi powder we first put about 100 grams of flour right at the bottom of the rocket. Because most of this is ejected just as the rocket leaves the pad it saves more of the colour powder for when the rocket is higher up in the air. We also try to usually fill it with a couple of different colours so that you end up with a transition of colours as the rocket flies.

Because these are older bottles we decided to only pressurise the rocket to 110psi.

The launch went well without issues and gave a nice colour plume on the way up. It would be interesting to see a larger version of the rocket that uses a lot more powder and a smaller nozzle. We're using 9mm nozzles for this, but a 7mm nozzle might give a nice long plume.

Likewise with the second launch the flew just as well. It's always gets a good reaction from the crowd because they are not expecting the colours.

As we still had some time in the day, we decided to launch our Axion rocket with foam. Again the rocket flew great and landed safely.
